The following is a true account of a burglary which occurred at the home of owners of an Akita we bred, and the action taken by that wonderful
and courageous young dog!

On July 13th somewhere between the hours of 10 am – 2 pm our house was broken into. Having set the alarm as we do each morning and our Akita, named Akira, having full run of the house along with 5 "beware of bad dog" signs posted on our perimeter fence must not have been enough to prevent this from happening. However, the climate in this area has greatly changed and burglars have become more aggressive. Ignoring these signs of warning or thinking they were nothing more than a deterrent the burglars tried to call our bluff or should I say Akira’s bluff by opening the gate to the pool area where they had to read a sign with a picture of an Akita which stated “WARNING, I make it to the fence in 2.1 seconds… can you?”. They proceeded to the back of the house where they ripped off a rod iron plant hanger from our fence and approached the back French doors. Obviously during this time being quiet enough that Akira did not hear them or perhaps Akira did hear them and he lay waiting in our master bedroom for them to make there move.

They used the rod iron bar to break the glass, which completely shattered and strewn glass across the dining room and living room area. At this point we believe that Akira came out of the master bedroom viciously barking, at which point they probably realized that we called their bluff as the signs were real and meaningful! They used the rod iron bar to hit him backing him into the master bedroom enough to throw the rod iron bar in and slamming the door. This only profusely angered Akira by evidence of the badly clawed door and gouged Mexican tile floor! He now wanted out at them! These characters started going through the house ripping through items and then suddenly stopped, we believe because Akira was going ballistic trying to get at them, scared them to run out the front door, which set off the alarm. They managed to get an i-pad that was clearly on top of the kitchen island and ripped open some decorative boxes which they thought cash or jewelry was in before departing.

We truly believe had it not been for Akira barking and going ballistic they would have done much more severe damage and stolen much more. Ironically, they did us a favor by closing Akira in the bedroom as he would have probably gotten out through the glass door they broke, and out the open fence gate, and roamed the neighborhood in a stressed condition. When we got home he was huddled in the master bath room shower, and it took him about 30 seconds to register back to us and then he just became extremely clingy towards us and was moaning and talking as if to tell us what had happened.

We put his harness on and brought him out where the police officers were filing out the report and as soon as they saw him their eyes got so big and they said “who the F*** would come in on a dog like this… they had to be really stupid or thought you were bluffing with the signs!” Amazingly, Akira was totally fine with them as if he knew they were the good guys. They approached him and petted him. Since the break in, Akira has noticeably changed, with regard to his alertness, which has become extremely heightened. It would be safe to say that his innate Akita instinct has now totally “kicked in” just 4 months shy of his 2nd birthday. A few days later, a delivery was made by Fed Ex and Akira actually jumped on the front glass door barking furiously, which he has never done before. When going to bed he now crawls up in the bed very gently and lays there for about 15 minutes then gets down and stays in the bedroom doorway the entire night. Never had we experienced a break in until now and this is our third Akita. He certainly performed then and since, in true Akita text book personality. This breed is absolutely incredible and it goes without saying that we are very proud of him and what he did to protect us and his home!

Akira is from our 2009 CowBoi x Samba litter,
we are all so very proud of him, and proud to have bred such a wonderful AKITA!
