Contract Terms For Puppy Purchases
You have requested to purchase a puppy from Gekko Akitas, and your description of your home situation has led us to agree to holding a puppy for you. We have spent more than 25 years caring for and over 15 years showing and breeding Akitas. We only breed our Akitas when pedigrees are compatible and careful planning goes into every litter. Companion puppies have been bred and raised with the same care, love, and attention as their show quality litter mates. Companion puppies are sold with the following guarantees and understandings:
Seller agrees to the following:
1.) Dog is guaranteed to be a purebred Akita, form is provided for registration with The American Kennel Club.
2.) Seller guarantees that the below-mentioned puppy is in good health, puppy has been checked for parasites and has been appropriately medicated for the same as required. The puppy is also current and up to date vaccinations (see vaccination schedule attached). It is the buyers responsibility to have the puppies shots kept up to date and buyer agrees to administer suitable heartworm prevention such as Heartguard, Interceptor, etc., for the dogs’s entire life. Failure to do so will void all guarantees.
3.) Puppy is being sold as a pet/companion quality, on a non-breeding contract. Said puppy is "pet quality" because he/she does not measure up to show quality standards in some way. It does not mean that it is of poor quality or an unsound animal. You can expect this animal to be a loving, genetically healthy companion for many years. Puppy is guaranteed that if it develops Hip Dysplasia that is so severe that dog needs major surgery or your vet recommends euthanasia before the age of 2 years old, it will be replaced with a puppy of like (companion) quality. If your puppy develops PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) in both eyes before the age of 2, it will be replaced. Any other genetic problems will be dealt with on an individual basis. Please feel free to discuss any problems you are having with your puppy, it is our intention for you to be happy with your pet.
4.) Breeder/Seller agrees to replace with a like quality puppy as soon as reasonably possible. We are a small breeder and it may take years to get your replacement puppy, as we do not have litters frequently. Buyer agrees to euthanize original puppy if need be before replacement is made. Proof of such will be given to seller/breeder. A veterinary exam by seller’s vet may be required before euthanasia of dog is allowed. Animal may not be sold or given to any place mentioned in section 9.

5.) Buyer understands they must take said puppy to veterinarian of their choice within 72 hours of purchase, and if puppy is found to be ill attributable to the seller, it may be returned to me (buyers cost) for a full refund of the full purchase price or a replacement puppy (if there is one available). A written statement on your veterinarians letterhead paper must be supplied by the buyer.
6.) Gekko or Gekko’s will be used first in the dogs registered name.
7.) Buyer agrees that this dog will not be used for breeding, and said puppy will have LIMITED REGISTRATION. Limited registration means: said dog cannot participate in any conformation shows, but may participate in any working endeavor. Also, no off-spring of this puppy will be able to be registered with the AKC.
8.) Puppy will be spayed or neutered before the age of one year old. If puppy turns out to be show quality and you are willing to show it, you may bring puppy back to seller for re-evaluation. If seller agrees that puppy is of a higher quality than companion, seller may lift limited registration for the price of one pick puppy back, and at that time seller will co-own.
9.) Buyer agrees that dog shall not be intended to produce off-spring for or to be sold to a pet store, retail outlet, broker, dog agent, dog dealer or laboratory. Buyer agrees that dog shall not be intended to produce offspring.
10.) Our dogs are bred from stock that have good temperaments. They are raised with love in our home, and receive daily handling and are taught to accept human dominance. Buyer agrees to take the puppy to a puppy kindergarten class and for continued socialization with humans and other animals and further education. You must take your puppy to obedience classes as soon as possible following puppy class. If you are having problems with your puppy, please call and we will try to help you out. If you live in our area, and want to bring said puppy to us for continued help, please do.
11.) Buyer agrees to keep dog/bitch as a house dog/bitch with a properly fenced in yard, or in a kennel run with proper housing. At no time will the animal be chained. We also strongly recommend that puppy will not be raised on slippery floors, poor footing on slippery surfaces such as tile and linoleum can hinder proper skeletal development.
12.) Buyer is responsible for all expenses incurred when buyer takes possession of dog.

13.) Said puppy will be fed a quality diet for the duration of it's life. We recommend a "meat based" diet. Avoid soy in the Akita’s diet, Akitas do not digest soy.
14.) All breeding stock has OFA and CERF clearances and certificates.
15.) Seller requests buyer to contact them once a month for the first 2 years of ownership for updates, and yearly thereafter, either via e-mail, telephone, or letter. More often than required amount is welcomed.
