A very helpful tip for people thinking of bringing a new Akita into their home, whether it be a puppy, or an older dog from rescue, or a retired show dog: Before you get your new Akita, research quality veterinary care. Get references from other Akita owners in your area. If this is not possible, visit various clinics and speak with staff and vets prior to that first appointment. Be sure the vet clinic you plan to use is comfortable working with Akitas, and preferably has experience with Akitas. Good vets will take the time to make your Akita feel comfortable and happy for its vet visits. A good relationship is begun in the very first visit. Plus it is great socialization for the puppy!
